The Council of International Neonatal Nurses (COINN) is proud to announce the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Skin InteGrity in Extreme Preterms Research NETwork (SIGNET) a global step forward in addressing neonatal skin injuries and advancing best practices in neonatal care.
This agreement formalises a strategic collaboration focused on promoting evidence-based skin care, improving outcomes for extremely preterm infants, and equipping healthcare professionals with the resources and knowledge they need to protect the most vulnerable.
Shared Commitment to Neonatal Skin Integrity
As neonatal survival rates continue to improve worldwide, attention is turning to quality-of-care outcomes, including the prevention and management of skin injuries in preterm and critically ill infants.
COINN and SIGNET share a commitment to improving clinical practices and outcomes through research, education, policy advocacy, and global engagement.
Leadership in Action
This partnership is further strengthened by active COINN representation within SIGNET.

Prof Karen Walker, COINN President, serves as a SIGNET Committee Member.

Prof. Miki Konishi and Prof. Marsha Campbell-Yeo, both non-executive COINN Board Members, also sit on the SIGNET Committee.

Their involvement reflects COINN’s ongoing leadership in advancing interdisciplinary collaboration to improve neonatal outcomes globally.
The objectives of this MoU include:
Joint Research and Data Collection: Collaborate on research initiatives to gather data on neonatal health, mortality rates, and morbidity trends.
Workshops and Conferences: Organise joint workshops and conferences to share knowledge and best practices in neonatal care.
Policy Advocacy: Advocate for policies that support neonatal health initiatives at national and international levels.
Awareness Campaigns: Launch awareness campaigns to educate communities and healthcare providers about neonatal health issues.
Areas of Collaboration:
Workshops and Conferences: Organise joint workshops and conferences to share knowledge and best practices in neonatal care.
Resource Development: Create and distribute educational materials, guidelines, and toolkits aimed at reducing neonatal mortality and morbidity.
Monitoring and Evaluation: Establish a framework for monitoring and evaluating the impact of joint initiatives on neonatal health.
Looking Ahead
To ensure the effective implementation of this agreement, both COINN and SIGNET will designate organisational leads to coordinate efforts, monitor progress, and align strategies. Regular joint meetings will ensure transparency, responsiveness, and a shared commitment to measurable impact.
Why This Matters
Maintaining skin integrity in extremely preterm infants is not just a clinical task; it is a critical component of compassionate, high-quality neonatal care. Additionally, skin integrity has an impact on pain, thermoregulation, and risks of infection. Through this partnership, COINN and SIGNET are uniting their expertise and global reach to make skin health a priority in neonatal care conversations and practices worldwide.
We look forward to sharing progress, research outcomes, and educational opportunities as this partnership evolves.
