As a peripatetic nurse who used to relish the freedom to travel to work in remote
rural Australia on nursing contracts, whilst maintaining a casual contract in
Wellington NICU, the past two years have been supremely challenging, not least
because I remain unable to return to NZ under the current MIQ arrangements, but
primarily as the consequences of the pandemic continue to roll out, the negative
impact on nursing care within Australian neonatal units that I have worked in, is
alarming; I am concerned that the great advances that have been made in recent
years to involve parents in the care of their baby are being eroded dramatically.
