This edition brings together global updates, professional recognition, and major event announcements — all reinforcing our shared commitment to improving outcomes for newborns and supporting neonatal nurses worldwide.

Here are some of the key highlights:

COINN Lusaka 2025: A Regional Celebration of Global Progress

COINN, in collaboration with the Neonatal Nurses Association of Zambia and Newborn Support Zambia, will host the African Neonatal Nursing Regional Conference on August 14–15, 2025 at the Mulungushi International Conference Centre in Lusaka.

This regional gathering will offer:

  • Evidence-based workshops and clinical discussions

  • Networking with global experts and frontline neonatal nurses

  • A celebration of COINN’s 20-year journey

We invite all members of the neonatal nursing community to join us as we celebrate past achievements and build momentum toward future goals.

Save the Date: COINN 2026 in Darwin, Australia

Looking ahead, we’re excited to announce the 11th International COINN Conference, to be held from August 25–28, 2026 at the Darwin Convention Centre in Australia.

Conference theme: “Transforming Neonatal Care: Innovate, Influence, Inspire”

This event will bring together neonatal nurses, researchers, educators, and healthcare professionals to explore innovations, share research, and foster global partnerships. Abstract submissions and registration details will be available in the coming months.

Honouring Dr. Shela Hirani: Leadership in Action

We’re proud to announce that Dr. Shela Hirani, COINN Board Member and Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean, has been awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medal by the Canadian Nurses Association.

Dr. Hirani’s work in breastfeeding advocacy has reached over 166,000 mothers globally and trained thousands of healthcare providers. Her recognition reflects her tireless commitment to equity, innovation, and global health.

Strengthening Global Education: COINN’s Education Committee

Led by Tracey Jones, COINN’s Education Committee is creating collaborative solutions to improve neonatal care education around the world. With members from over 30 countries, the committee is:

  • Sharing culturally adaptable training frameworks

  • Collaborating with the WHO on new educational modules

  • Developing a central digital resource hub for educators and practitioners

This work ensures that best practices in neonatal nursing are accessible and adaptable across healthcare settings.

A Reflection from Judy Hitchcock

COINN Board Member Judy Hitchcock offers a compelling reflection on the state of global nursing. She highlights:

  • The ongoing strain on nursing workforces worldwide

  • The promise and uncertainty of AI integration in healthcare

  • The importance of advocacy, recognition, and sustained investment in nurses

Her piece is a timely reminder of the dedication required to uphold quality care in challenging environments — and the hope that emerges from collective action.
